Sports Award Evening

The academic year 2022-23 saw over 170 students participating in 20 different sports teams. To celebrate the sporting commitments and achievements of our students, Mount St Mary’s held the inaugural Sports Awards Evening on Thursday 5th October. The intent of the awards evening was to recognise students’ commitment and achievements and to reward their Retribuam. We continue to be extremely grateful for what the students give back to the Mount St Mary’s sporting community and I hope the passion that students demonstrate for sport will stay with them on their journey through life. Over the last year, the resilience students had shown during some extremely competitive matches and races, where they have not given up, was commendable. The respect students had for their team members and their sportsmanship towards the opposition was regularly acknowledged by other schools, and their determination to succeed and learn contributed to them becoming the best version of themselves.

On the evening it was a pleasure to welcome back ex-student, Lorna Kirkwood Thompson as our guest speaker. Lorna plays for Leeds United Women’s football team and spoke about her sporting journey, talking about barriers and offering advice for the students. We also welcomed Steve Boothroyd, who came on behalf of Leeds and Hunslet Schools’ Rugby League to award Mount St Mary’s with the John Ahm award for commitment to Rugby.

The evening gave the PE Department the opportunity to thank all those that had been involved in Sport over the year. None of this would be possible without the continued support of parents and carers, the students, but most of all the staff who give up their time to run extra-curricular clubs and fixtures.

Well done and congratulations to all the students who won awards and thank you to all who attended the evening. I am already looking forward to next year’s event!
