Sports and Extra-curricular Awards
On Wednesday 10th July we held our Annual Sports and Extra-curricular Awards celebrations. This year we have seen more students representing Mount St Mary’s in Sport and Extra-curricular teams than we have before. We have both new and existing teams going from strength to strength and, by hosting the Awards Ceremony, we were able to celebrate our students in all of their achievements this academic year. The growth of extra-curricular across the school has been outstanding and at this year’s awards we were able to recognise those that had been not only in sports teams, but whole school teams, including the Debate team, Mock Trial participants and the entrants of the Knife Crime competition.
We are very proud of the commitment, passion and Respect that all our students have demonstrated this year. All students received their award for participation and for each team one student was selected as the performer of the year. These students have been recognised for many different reasons, be that their ability, their leadership skills, being a role model or an all-round versatile member of the team. In addition to recognising the performers of the year we had some even greater achievements to celebrate – 11 students received their Bronze Commitment to Sport Award and 13 received the Silver Award. They can now be seen around school wearing their Sports Ambassador badges which were rewarded to students who have represented the school in 2 or more sports for 2 or 3 years, respectively. Next there was our Team of the Year, which was awarded to the Year 7/8 Boys’ Athletics team, after being crowned the Champions of all the schools in Leeds – an incredible achievement! Our final award was the Sports Personality of the Year Award, which went to one student in each year group who demonstrates, consistently, all the values and attributes we would want to see in our Athletes, the perfect role models, who have unwavering commitment, outstanding leadership skills, the utmost Respect and a high level of sporting ability. Well done to
Mary Gyabaa Owusu (Y7), Jack Hood (Y8), Yaried Alem (Y9),
David Fernado (Y10) and Camila Cacheu (Y11).
As well as being able to celebrate all our students’ achievements, the Sports and Extra-curricular awards ceremony gave us an opportunity to say a few thank yous. We are thankful for the time and effort that the students have given back to our school community. None of this would be possible without their hard work and dedication. Alongside our students we are grateful to all our parents and carers and would like to thank them for their continual support. The final thanks went to the staff at Mount St Mary’s, who give up their time on a weekly basis to provide these
extra-curricular opportunities for our students. My personal thanks must go to the PE Department who have all supported and enabled the growth of what we can offer the students. Without their efforts we would not be able to provide these fantastic opportunities.
Congratulations and well done to all the award winners. I am excited to see what next year has in store.
