International Women’s Day
It was such an honour to be invited to celebrate International Women’s Day at AMT Headingley Stadium on Friday 8th March. The students selected to go were taken as a reward for their commitment to training and rugby this year.
The girls had the privilege of playing on the pitch, home to Leeds Rhinos rugby team. They took part in a session run by Leeds Rhinos coaches and then got to meet the Duke and Dutchess of Edinburgh, who were visiting Leeds for the Community Sport and Recreation awards. Students got the opportunity to speak to Prince Edward and his wife Sophie, who were asking the team about how their season was going and their involvement in rugby league.
What an incredible experience, one that very few people get to do, and one I hope the students will remember for the rest of their lives. To finish, the students got a tour around the stadium and the players’ changing room.
At the beginning of this academic year the growth of girls participating in rugby league at MSMs extracurricular club rose significantly and it was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate women in sport on this occasion. Thank you to Leeds Rhinos Foundation for providing this opportunity. The foundation has been an integral part to the growth of girl’s rugby through the opportunities they have provided our school. This has included tournaments for the students to play in and organising the summer league, as well as providing rugby coaches in curriculum time and at after school clubs, all of which has supported the growth we have seen.
