E Zone Trip to John Lewis

On Tuesday 4 October a group of 10 EAL students from different year groups visited John Lewis in Leeds city centre. The trip was a great opportunity for the students to learn new vocabulary, practise different life skills and consider possible career pathways. On arrival the students were greeted by the Marketing Manager who answered some of our questions about the store.

Did you know John Lewis employ 150 extra staff for the Christmas period?

The students had a language treasure hunt challenge to complete, 17 questions relating to different aspects of the store. The cross curricular questions were all set to challenge their vocabulary, knowledge, and ability to navigate around a large store using their reading and understanding skills.

Whilst searching for clues on Level 4, the students were fortunate to speak to an ex Mount St Mary’s pupil who presently works for John Lewis. She explained what Mount St Mary’s school was like in the 1970’s – the swimming pool provoked the most interest!

The trip concluded with a trip to the café, a well-earned cool drink and, most importantly, to find out who had won the Golden Ticket for completing the most answers on the language treasure hunt.

“When can we come again”? was the question asked by the entire group as we left the store.
