Year 10 Prevent Workshop – Peace Museum

Year 10 took part in a workshop in partnership with Peace Museum, based in Bradford. They created learning activities and educational activities for schools, posing questions about equality, diversity, cohesion, peace and non-violence.

The session itself looked at some broad definitions of hate crime and how hate is spread online, particularly through social media.

Real life examples were used to show how hate can be spread through fake news, photoshopped images and group discussions on how we can decide if we can trust a source online. Students learnt how to fact check social media posts as well as reinforcing how to keep themselves safe online, a hugely important skill in today’s society.

The workshop gave students the context of how people are drawn into extremist thinking, as well as looking at how extremist groups, including ISIS and far-right groups, use social media to engage people. Students also debated how high-profile figures such as Andrew Tate use their influence to draw people into hateful ideologies.

The session ended with students creatively thinking about how we can reduce the spread of these ideologies online, and how we can use the platforms for good.

Further work will continue in PSHCE.

I learnt that people can make fake events to promote hate against a group of people.

Media have many misconceptions about powerful people and make profit from these misconceptions.

We must report when there is hate crime.

I learnt that curtain types of media can promote hate crime.

Be careful of what you see online not everything is true!

You can get arrested for hate crime.
