Year 10 Nursing Taster Day

On 8th May, Year 10 Health and Social students were invited to have a tour of the new nursing facilities at Leeds Trinity University. The students enjoyed a tour and listened to current students talk about University life. They explored the simulation rooms in the new nursing building and had an interactive session on how to look after patients. The students worked in teams to change a bed with a model patient in it. They then explored the other parts of the campus, including the library and onsite student accommodation. The lecturers were both experienced nurses and gave the students an insight about life as a nurse and the different types of nursing. The students will now be able to understand the routes into nursing and be able to discuss this in their coursework.

Year 10 Health and Social Care students visit Leeds City College

Our Year 10 students visited Leeds City College on Monday 26th June, to provide them with the opportunity to explore what studying Health and Social Care at college may look like.

Students experimented in the laboratory, inhaling and exhaling pigs lungs. They looked at different factors that impact our lungs and cause disease, such as pollutants, smoking and vapes.

Students also conducted some tests that measured their health to give health professionals an indication of if they are making progress and getting better or not.

Other activities included looking at the impact of alcohol on our bodies, examining our hygiene and the impact that pregnancy may have upon us. We completed some Lego therapy and colouring as part of mental health care.

Thackray Medical Museum Visit

At the Thackray Medical Museum students immersed themselves in the history of health care up to the advances that have shaped the way we look after ourselves and each other today. We explored the galleries and wandered through the streets of Victorian Leeds. We watched operations taking place in the 19th Century operating theatre, looked at how the world responds to crisis and discovered innovations that changed the world!

Health & Social Guest Speakers

On Monday 22 May 2023, 2 guest speakers spoke to Year 9 and Year 10 Health & Social Care students.

The first speaker, Maya, was blind from 14 months old. She brought along her German Shepherd guide dog, Monty. She spoke for an hour about her life, struggles and being a mum and a vocal coach. Monty is her 4th guide dog and she could not stress enough the great work that Guide Dogs for the Blind do. Students were inspired by her story, as she did not want her disability to be a barrier in her life.

We also heard from Phil, a past teacher at Mount St Mary’s, who is now an ambassador for Dementia Awareness. He explained what dementia is like, with lots of visuals, and told the students how they can help if a family member suffers from the disease. They were all given a dementia friends badge and if they are seen wearing this by someone in the community with dementia, they will know that the student is dementia aware and happy to help.
