Ada Lovelace Day

This year the Creative Arts, Computing and Technologies Faculty spent a week celebrating Ada Lovelace Day (ALD) across Computing, Technology, Art and Hospitality and Catering. Ada Lovelace Day is an international celebration of the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). It aims to increase the profile of women in STEM and, in doing so, create new role models who will encourage more girls into STEM careers and support women already working in STEM.

Students got involved in a range of fun activities such as baking binary inspired biscuits, painting Pop Art inspired artwork of Ada Lovelace and completing computing challenges around cyber security. These activities highlighted to students some of the potential careers available to everyone in these industries and gave them a chance to put their skills to the test.

Creative Arts Initiative https://mountstmarys.org.uk/creative-arts-initiative/ Tue, 08 Feb 2022 07:00:43 +0000 https://mountstmarys.org.uk/?p=13380

At Mount St Mary’s, we pride ourselves on the extra-curricular opportunities that we are able to afford our students, and as a CAT faculty, we were delighted to have been approached by Leeds Arts University to offer year 9 students a place on their Creative Pathways Programme.

Students with an interest in pursuing a future within Art and Design have applied to participate in an initiative with the University, that will give them access to unique opportunities throughout their next 3 years at Mount St Mary’s. The initiative will support students who are keen to pursue further and higher education within creative arts, by giving them a valuable early insight into the pathways and access routes available within their chosen career path.

With 5 events taking place each academic year, our students will have the chance to develop a range of creative skills and a portfolio of work, visit galleries and gain a deeper understanding of art collections, meet university students currently pursuing creative subjects and gain an insight into University life. All these activities will help our students to grow in confidence on their journey throughout their education and beyond.

The CAT faculty are keen to develop the personal responsibility each student applies to their own success, as well as creating the opportunities that will build their resilience to adapt to different environments within education and beyond. We are delighted to confirm that 9 students have been accepted on to the programme and we look forward to sharing with you the fantastic events that they will participate in during the course of the year.

Year 9 CiM https://mountstmarys.org.uk/year-9-cim/ Thu, 18 Mar 2021 11:13:19 +0000 https://mountstmarys.org.uk/?p=7590

Year 9 Creative iMedia have spent the first term of this academic year developing their skills to create graphics for a range of different target audiences and purposes. They have been using industry standard software such as Adobe Fireworks and Photoshop to create portfolios of work with a creative and original flair. This is the software that professional graphic designers use so it has been really impressive to see how they have got to grips with it in just one term. Each project involves them having to read a brief and work out what the client requires, then they have to research and plan before creating a graphic to meet the specific criteria. A winner is selected from each project by a set of judges, who might be a group of staff or a class from another year group. The key is to make sure the graphics are eye-catching and visually pleasing whilst also meeting the requirements of the client. Prizes so far have been chocolate, fancy gel pens and Amazon vouchers. Keep up the good work Year 9!
