Yorkshire Sculpture Park trip
Years 8, 9, & 10

We recently had the pleasure of celebrating the shortlisted winners of our school organiser front cover competition from Years 8, 9, and 10. As a reward for their hard work and creativity, these talented students were invited to a special trip to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, where we enjoyed a day of art and inspiration.

It was a fantastic day, not only to acknowledge their artistic achievements, but also to inspire them further. We are incredibly proud of their efforts and thrilled to see Ikjot and Maya’s fantastic designs featured on this year’s school organiser, bringing their creativity to life in our school community.

Year 8 Art Trip

On 18th June, 14 Year 8 students enjoyed a tour around the new Leeds Art University building. The University offers further and higher education and has lots of studios. The group spoke to current students, saw the state-of-the-art facilities and listened to Miss Ahmed talking about her studies whilst at the University. We had a preview of the Undergraduate end of year show, which included contemporary art, animation, illustration, graphic design, film, fashion, textiles, creative advertising and photography from students across 15 courses. Our students were inspired by the different specialisms within art and design and look forward to using mixed media skills in their upcoming projects.

Students spoke highly of the work and Alissia said:

“I really loved the art trip because it inspired me to get more into art and design. I loved walking round seeing different things; e.g. fashion, textiles, sculptures etc. Along with wanting to do art, I am also looking at wanting to go to that university. The university is really big, creative, detailed and a big influence for young people”.

Year 8 ART project – Under the Sea

Students have been experimenting and building their ceramic skills to create these wonderful tiles.

Students used images from sea life creatures to inspire their experimentation and recreate patterns found under the sea. These are the finished pieces from 8C which are a great example of fantastic outcomes – well done 8C.

Year 8 Day of The Dead Project

8R completed their Day of the Dead project in Art and, for their final lesson, they designed and painted sugar skulls on card. Students had the chance to really focus on trying to control the paint brushes and refine their acrylic painting techniques. They all did a fantastic job.

A special mention goes to Alfie Cavanagh who showed great resilience and massively improved his painting skills.

Year 7 Collaborative Art work

Just before the Christmas break 7A and 7R students took part in a collaborative art piece inspired by the Year 7 Retribuam Day.

Students were asked to help each other complete their individual tasks and then had to work as a team to figure out how the different pieces fitted together to make a larger piece of art.

They did an amazing job and created two festive pieces of art.

‘Our Earth, Our City’ Art Exhibition

The Art and Technology department are delighted to announce that four students from Mount St Mary’s have been selected as winners of a Leeds based Art competition.

Their brief was to create a piece of artwork inspired by the beauty and fragility of the Earth. All Year 7 and Year 8 students took part in the competition, alongside many other artists connected to Leeds.

From Monday November 7th to Sunday November 27th, the winners of the competition are to have their work displayed at the ‘Our Earth, Our City’ exhibition hosted by Holy Trinity Church in Leeds City Centre.

The heart of Our Earth, Our City is the Gaia Earth, a touring artwork by artist Luke Jerram, designed to recreate the overview effect experienced by astronauts when they view Earth from Space.

The four students were invited to be amongst the first people in Leeds to see the Gaia Earth, where they were awarded prizes for their outstanding achievements.

A huge congratulations to Blessing, Olivia, Claudia and Miranda. It was a fantastic evening of celebration, well and truly deserved.

As a chance to celebrate the 20 Year 8 students who were shortlisted for the competition, there will be a trip to see the Our Earth, Our City exhibition on Friday November 18th.

Ada Lovelace Day

This year the Creative Arts, Computing and Technologies Faculty spent a week celebrating Ada Lovelace Day (ALD) across Computing, Technology, Art and Hospitality and Catering. Ada Lovelace Day is an international celebration of the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). It aims to increase the profile of women in STEM and, in doing so, create new role models who will encourage more girls into STEM careers and support women already working in STEM.

Students got involved in a range of fun activities such as baking binary inspired biscuits, painting Pop Art inspired artwork of Ada Lovelace and completing computing challenges around cyber security. These activities highlighted to students some of the potential careers available to everyone in these industries and gave them a chance to put their skills to the test.
